thursday thoughts pt. 23

This is one of my favourite quotes. (It's Shakespeare.) I first heard it when my mum sent it as a text commemorating my dad's 80th birthday a couple of years ago, and since then I've liked to remember this quote whenever a loved one dies or it's an anniversary of someone's deathday. I find it comforting in a way. The picture accompanying the quote is inspired by another one though; "From my rotting body, flowers shall grow and I am in them, and that is eternity." by Edward Munch. I like that one too.

to the sky

So, my main reason for going abroad was to see this ski jumping competition (4-Hills Tournament) and I can't even begin to describe how great it was. I only went to two of the four hills, first in GaPa and then in Innsbruck (where these photos are from). I know this probably isn't something a lot of you lot reading this are interested in, but I love my ski jumping. Back in 2005, or somewhere around that, I really wanted to become a ski jumper. But like a lot of my career choices it's a very male dominated profession and I didn't even know that women had their own competitions. And even then I would've been quite old to start training.. Anyway, I had such an amazing time. I've been on touching-distance from people I almost hero-worship, I've seen one of my favourite sporting events ever and I loved it all so much. I cannot begin to imagine what it would have been like to be there in, say, 2005, when I was more actively following ski jumping and actually knew all the jumpers and all the rules. (I don't care for all the young ones trying to push their way to the top, haha. And they're continuously trying to improve the rules so that the conditions would be fairer to everyone, which I think takes a little of the excitement away.) Why I chose this year is sort of important, anyhow. My favourite of all favourites, Janne Ahonen, made his second comeback, and as this may well have been my last chance to see him jump, I am the happiest gal to have had the opportunity to do so. I love GaPa and Innsbruck so much.

Well done you, if you had the patience to read through me rambling about something you possibly have no interest in or haven't even heard of! Believe me that I would've had so much more to rave about and so many more photos to spam you with. I think I have more than a 100 pictures that look more or less alike and I happily spent hours trying to figure out who actually is in every one of them. Oh, well.

far over the misty mountains cold

Coat - Still Young Vintage
Hat -Seppälä
Scarf&Mittens - Grandma's old
Shoes - Primark
Bag - Marimekko/Sister's old

This is pretty much what I looked like for a week. Granted, I did change the clothes underneath, but you most certainly wouldn't have seen them for most part of the day. I spent hours standing in the cold, so staying warm was my number one priority. It was actually really sunny throughout my trip and the lack of snow this year really surprised me. But as someone who tends to stay inside for far too much of the time, it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

saints and sun and stunningness

I love Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It's quite a small town, but honestly one of the prettiest ones I've ever been to. (Also, just in case you're interested, GaPa used to be two different towns that Hitler forced to be combined, and apparently people of Partenkirchen aren't too glad when the whole town is referred to as Garmisch.) I especially like the wee (or large) paintings that a lot of the houses had. There's saints, scenery, athletes and what not. Why don't more buildings have paintings on the outside walls? That is just so pretty. And don't even get me started on the Alps. I don't really have that many pictures of the mountains considering how much I liked them. Sometimes you see something so breathtakingly beautiful that you don't want to have photos of it as they would never do justice to it and you'd rather have the memory of this wondrous thing and the feelings it evoked in you. That's how I feel about the Alps. And as stunning as this area is, I don't think I'd ever want to live there because I wouldn't want to get used to the scenery and take all of it for granted. You know.

i take pictures of buildings (in germany)

Is it obvious that I like my frog perspective? And architecture photos? Anyway, here's my favourite pictures from Munich. I only stayed there for a wee while and as one of the days I actually was in Munich was Epiphany, pretty much everything was closed. But it means that there's still more to see and explore if/when I go back! These are mostly from around the Marienplatz and it's rather pretty. I have to say that I have kind of changed my opinion on Germany during my wee trip. I hadn't been there before and was under the impression that I didn't like Germany at all. But now I think I do. Especially GaPa, but I'll be aposting about that later!

thursday thoughts pt. 22

I'm sure I have posted this quote before, but I wrote it down and still really like it. And it doesn't hurt to remember this more than once.

going back in time, pt. 6

Dress - Vintage

I remember really liking the first photo when I took it, and I still do. As I still really like this dress. The only thing different is possibly my hair. I can't braid it to be a long tail, but it's grown enough for me to do a front French braid! When I first cut it I couldn't do that as there were always wee bits annoyingly sticking out, and I've been far too excited to be able to braid my hair again. Also at first, I was in a way cautious of wearing vintage dresses with my short hair. But it turns out it looks just fine, don't you think? At least this one doesn't really need the long hair (or the awkward) pose of the original photo!

going back in time, pt. 5

 Blazer&Top - H&M
Braces - Grandpa's old
Trousers - Mama's old

This is probably the outfit that's most different after recreation. I don't own any black pants anymore, and even though they seem like such a basic in one's wardrobe I've never even felt like I needed a pair. I remember buying those black ones only because I needed black trousers to wear as a waitress for a week, haha! The braces don't work with my gray trousers though, as they're too high-waisted. My grandpa was a (fairly) large man, so it's strange that I can wear his braces at all as I'm (fairly) petite!
